Projectors – What Makes Them the Best Choice For Your Home Theater?   no comments

Posted at 6:32 pm in Audio & Video

Projectors have come a long way in recent years. While there was a time that projectors were very expensive to own and operate that era is coming to a close and is quickly being replaced by a period of time where having an at home projector is both affordable and provides the greatest viewing experience for the owner. We have all heard the old rumors about why we should not purchase projectors, the expensive bulbs, the lack of space, but does it really hold water or have we advanced far enough along to the point that owning a projection television really make sense?

One of the great things about owning the projector is the fact that the prices come down significantly in recent years. Compared with other televisions the cost per inch for a projector is definitely the most cost effective way to go. Once you start to get up to the 50 inch mark you’re going to start paying a good deal for all LCD and plasma televisions, so in this regard owning a projector may be the most cost effective way to get the biggest screen possible. You also have the benefit of having an acoustically invisible format when you own a projector. Where is having a large flat screen television can interfere with sound waves, there’s nothing to hinder acoustics when it comes to projectors. So if crisp unadulterated sound is of importance to you and this might very well be part of the reason that you might want to purchase a projector.

One issue that you might be concerned about if you are considering purchasing a projector is having to have total, or near total darkness to be able to efficiently see your screen. While this might seem like a hindrance they really is the best way to replicate the theater experience at home. Even using a flat screen television you will typically want to have the darkest room possible to avoid light contamination of the screen. So even though it might seem like an inconvenience to have to watch your movies in the dark, it really does have some advantages and provide the most theater like experience that is possible at home.

Another possible concern of having a projector is the setup. Mounting a projector can be a bit of a hassle but it’s definitely worth it if you’re planning on having a dedicated theater room. All you need to do is to mount your screen, mount your projector, and install your speakers. A few plush armchairs and stadium seating won’t hurt either, but with one relatively small room in just a few accessories you can all but eliminate the need to go to the movie theater. After all why would you bother spending all that money to see a movie that will come out on DVD in just a few months when you can do it at home for next to nothing? You can even make buttered popcorn at home if you want to complete the theater feel without being there.

Protect Your HVAC System From Hurricane Weather   no comments

Posted at 3:27 pm in Heating & Air

As summer ends and the weather cools, those living in coastal areas may look forward to the beginning of the school year, and perhaps reclaiming their city from the influx of tourists that crowded the beaches and malls. Yet, once these visitors are back in their minivans and campers, locals have truly unwelcome guests to face: hurricanes and tropical storms. The damage rough weather can inflict on your home and HVAC system can cause headaches in the aftermath, so it’s important to make sure everything is protected.

Seasoned coastal residents already know the drill when a hurricane warning is in effect: bring in the plants and patio chairs, and turn over outdoor tables if you’re unable to fit them in the garage. You know, too, to tape and/or board up your windows where possible, but you’ve probably wondered how to handle your heating and air conditioning in bad weather. You can’t move your outside system, but if you have a cover it’s best to make sure it’s tightly secured to protect your equipment from harsh rains.

Also, it’s best to simply shut everything down if you anticipate a power outage. This way, you reduce the risk of blowing out circuits and burning out the compressor when the electricity returns.

Once the storm is passed, check your outside equipment for any damage like dents or dings from fallen debris. If you feel there is something obstructing your system and preventing it from working properly, get a call into your HVAC repairman before you work your AC.

As you prepare your emergency hurricane kits, take care to watch your heating and cooling systems. If you’re close to the storm, don’t take chances and run any equipment that might burn out – you want your HVAC running long after the rains have stopped.

Exterior House Painting Help   no comments

Posted at 5:32 pm in Painting

With how much work it is to paint an entire house, it is funny how many people have set out to accomplish such a feat. Although it can be fun to share time with friends and family painting a home, you need to understand how much time and effort it actually can take. It is important to study some painting techniques to help ensure your painting project will go as smooth as possible. Here are a few tips to help you make sure your house looks great and will save you time and money!

The first step in painting a house is gathering all of the correct materials and supplies. You want to make sure you have everything you need at the start of your project so you do not waste time while you have good weather running to the store. You can get all of your supplies at a local hardware store or one of the bigger chains such as Lowes or Home Depot. When choosing your supplies, I would not purchase the cheap paint as it will not hold up as well in the outside elements. Remember, paint has more than one purpose, not only to look nice but to protect your walls too.

While you are getting your supplies, its important to remember the color you choose will last 15+ years. You want to scan the neighborhood to choose a color that helps your house stand out but not so much that it is obnoxious. Are you painting the trim too? What colors are you thinking? Remember the style or architecture of your home when choosing a paint color as well. Keeping these things in mind will help you get a color you and your neighbors will love for years.

After you have all of your supplies and the paint picked out, you will want to prep your house for the paint. Make sure to scrape all of old paint off the exterior of your home to prevent future peeling. Next you will want to tape all windows, railings, brick etc that you are not wanting to paint. If you have landscaping around your home you will want to get old sheets or tarps to lay down underneath the area you are painting to prevent any ugly drips.

It is important to consider the square footage of your house and the manpower and time it will take to complete the job. It is almost more difficult to start a project, screw it up and then call in house painters to come and fix your mistakes. Some painting companies actually charge more for that than they do to paint an entire house.

If you are considering painting your house in the near future, sometimes it can help to consult with Denver house painters to get help estimating the square footage you will need to paint. They also can help you choose a nice color scheme. If you need more tips on painting, check out my: Painting Blog. I have a ton of articles with painting tips and advice!

The Basics Of Pool Filtration Equipment   no comments

Posted at 12:36 am in Pools & Spas

Unsurprisingly, the part of a swimming pool that causes homeowners the most frustration and headaches is the pump/filter arrangement.

There’s no such thing as a pool that doesn’t need or have a pump and a filter. People swim in pools; stuff falls into them from trees and blows into them on the wind. So pools need filters to keep them clean, and they need pumps to circulate the water through those filters.

Filters come in three varieties: Sand filters, cartridge filters, and diatomaceous earth, or DE, filters. Each variety has its own set of benefits and drawbacks; and the choice you make will depend on your individual needs. It’s also important to note that filters come in different sizes and sub-varieties, so if you’re buying one for the first time, be sure you’re getting the right one.

On the other hand, there’s really only one type of pump: The kind that runs water through your pool’s filter. But pumps have a broad spectrum of varying elements, like energy efficiency rating, horsepower, and head pressure. But when your pump is installed properly, it keeps your filter running smoothly and your pool clean. You’ll also need a timer for the pump, so it can turn on and off by itself. This is very important, since forgetting to turn the pump on can result in chemical imbalances in your pool.

To figure out what kind of pump and filter are right for you, you must consider a variety of factors, like the pool size, the size and number of plumbing lines going to the pool, the number of people using it, and the frequency with which they’ll use it. If you’re having a pool installed for the first time, you’ll need to talk to your construction contractor about these things. If you’ve bought a new home with a pool in it, you may want to take a hard look at whether the pool’s systems are operating as well as they could be.

But your filter won’t be the only thing keeping your pool clean. Responsible pool ownership also means maintaining the chemical levels of your pool. That means keeping chlorine, pH, and water hardness at acceptable levels at all times. Your pump will help in this endeavor by circulating the chemicals throughout the pool.

If all of this seems like a lot to keep track of, don’t worry. Many pool owners hire a pool service provider to keep their pools running smoothly and full of clean, healthy water. Check your local listings for a good contractor; many offer reasonable prices for repeat customers.

But take your pump and filter very seriously: They’re what keeps your pool water healthy and swimmable.

The Benefits of Strand Woven Bamboo Flooring   no comments

Posted at 6:42 pm in Flooring

Flooring must be tough and durable. Homeowners use many different wood, stone and tile materials to create floors that will stand up to traffic, furniture and time. One very hard, durable and beautiful material to create unique flooring is strand woven bamboo flooring. This flooring is actually even tougher than flooring celebrated for its durability such as hickory, cherry and oak wood flooring. Bamboo has the strength for many uses such as furniture, and becomes even harder and more durable when put through a special manufacturing process that creates strand woven bamboo. The process doubles the hardness and strength of the bamboo.

There are many species of bamboo. The specie that produces the right material to make planks for strand woven bamboo floors is called Moso. The process involves cutting the bamboo plant into strips. Next the plant is boiled, which removes any sugary plant substance that could attract termites, making the bamboo planks virtually termite-proof. The boiled-bamboo strands are allowed to dry and then put under high pressure. The pressure, combined with a special adhesive, flattens the strands and molds them together into planks.

The end product is a very dense plank that is perfect for use as flooring that must endure heavy traffic and the challenges of furniture, pets and children. The appearance is unique, creating a natura, lovely and unusual wood effect that comes in a fine variety of wood hues to coordinate with any decor. Bamboo flooring is a much more environmentally-responsible wood choice. Bamboo grows rapidly, unlike trees. Bamboo cultivation is common world-wide for its many uses and does not require any deforestation in order to create a wide variety of products from flooring to furniture.

Installation of strand-woven bamboo flooring is similar to other kinds of wood flooring. Installers can either apply it directly on an asphalt floor using glue, staples or nails. Another type of installation is “floating” which makes it feasible to install the bamboo planks anywhere regardless of the floor’s foundation or the floor’s structure. Strand woven bamboo floors are an excellent choice when remodeling a home because of the ease of installation as well as the beauty and durability that will provide years of service.

Shopping For Commercial Grade Gate Locks   no comments

Posted at 1:12 am in Security

Business owners have a hard enough time trying to keep employees safe while at work and their assets from the hands of thieves off the streets. The best solution to prevent unauthorized foot traffic on your commercial property is the installation of electronically controlled gate locks that work exclusively on steel or metal pedestrian gates. Security guards cannot be everywhere at once on your property, and this will aide them in filtering out unwanted salespersons, and the occasional thug looking to get his or her hands on something of value to steal. The investment is a drop in the bucket compared to the value and extra safety it will provide your facility.

There is a wide array of gate-locks available for business grade use, and can be installed at the time of a new fencing system being erected, or added on to your current passages for foot traffic at the perimeter. There are systems so advance now that they can be remotely operated via an Internet browser, and or a cellular phone that has access to Web appliances. They will in general cost about three times as much as a keypad system, but in case of an emergency you can remotely allow the police or a vendor pass through without having to travel back to your business in the middle of the night.

Securitron is one maker of such automated gate locking systems, and offers a complete unit for as little as seven hundred dollars. They also sell optional remote door locks to work off the same arrangement. Essentially, you could guide, and allow a person access to certain parts of your business property while sitting in your easy chair at home relaxing with your family. These locks will fit most average pedestrian type gates, but some may need physical modification with a torch, or grinder to provide the most secure fitment, and professional looking installation.

This system will also offer greater control of access codes, and the ability to review the codes that were used to access any part of your property that is restricted by these locks. The reports are invaluable, when a breach occurs in the middle of the night, and someone’s access code was used instead of a forced entry. This will allow the police a greater base of information when questioning suspects that may even work for your company presently. The addition of DVR based CCTV camera systems and this secure remote locking system will keep track and make positive ID of anyone passing through access points at anytime.

Mini Bathroom Sinks – Perfect For Small Bathrooms   no comments

Posted at 9:55 pm in Bathrooms

Many older homes have small bathrooms and even homes with newer construction often have second or third bathrooms which are much smaller in size than the master bathroom. When the space available to place a sink is at a premium for a bathroom remodeling, mini bathroom sinks offer the perfect solution for both style and saving space.

Often a very small room that currently features an oversized sink that overwhelms the space can be transformed into a much more attractive space that allows for better traffic flow and movement by replacing that large unit with a mini version that doesn’t mean any sacrifice in quality or luxury. A professional contractor or remodeler can take inventory of the space available and the current positioning of the sink to make recommendations about installing a more compact version that will not only save space but also give the room a more balanced appearance.

Pedestal mini bathroom sinks are very popular among contractors faced with remodeling a very small bathroom. Pedestal mini bathroom sinks add the look of luxury yet are very affordable as well as available in a variety of materials and colors, including ceramic, marble, granite, glass and stainless steel. Because the pedestal style of mini sink doesn’t require a vanity, its space needs are minimal, making it the perfect sink selection for a small bathroom.

Another clever space saver when it comes to selecting a mini sink is the corner sink. Like the pedestal model, this style fits snugly into any corner of the room and comes in a variety of colors, including traditional white and black. The corner sink is also constructed using a variety of materials ranging from ceramic to stainless steel. Most versions don’t allow for storage of supplies and toiletries underneath because they are wall mounted rather than being attached to a vanity unit.

But corner sinks are also available as an entire vanity to accommodate storing towels, soaps, shampoos and other items used on a daily basis in this room. The wide selection of affordable mini sinks available in the marketplace today can accommodate homeowners who want a more old-fashioned, Victorian style theme as well as those who prefer that their remodeled bathroom be much more sleek and contemporary.

Mini sinks can also be custom ordered for special design needs. If there are smaller sinks that appeal to a homeowner, each can become distinctive by installing the unit with custom or unique faucets to carry through a particular theme in the room.

Bella Stone – It’s Vinyl, It’s Insulated, And it Looks So Real That it Will Fool You   no comments

Posted at 5:12 pm in Stones & Bricks

Vinyl siding has evolved in the thirty plus years I have been in this industry. In its infancy you saw vinyl siding products in basic white a two profiles. Then along came a few color options but one common problem among manufacturers remained. How to control the chemical process to keep the material flexible over time especially when subjected to extreme sun or winter cold?

As a result vinyl siding was considered to be fragile and easily damaged up until the last ten years or so. Through advances in technology all manufacturers have created much better products to the extent that most modern product now carry a limited lifetime warranty. When you combine that fact with the vast array of products and colors now available it is not hard to see why modern vinyl siding products have become a best value in many markets.

To illustrate how vast your choices have become, I am going to give you a breakdown of all the available products from one prominent manufacturer. I think you will be surprised to learn they even offer a very realistic cultured stone look in an insulated vinyl product that is very do-it-yourself friendly and looks amazingly realistic.

The vinyl siding manufacture I am going to feature here is the Exterior Portfolio by Crane. In this product line description I will start with the most unique products and work my way to the most basic. In the Exterior Portfolio by Crane the first product line I will cover is their newest.

Bella Stone® is the first architecturally correct looking stone finish I have ever seen in a vinyl product, an insulated vinyl product at that. It comes to you in panels of varied sizes and mounts with a simple starter strip and clip system similar to many other vinyl sidings. What makes it unique is that it has a full line of accessories including a joint filler and aggregate that you place on the joints to make them disappear. It can be cut from the back to form its own corners or the manufacturer sells a complete corner system as well water tables and window sill pieces unique to their system. I have been amazed at the natural look and ease of installation. This system is perfect for anyone looking for the beauty of natural stone at a fraction of the cost and effort to install. Bella Stone® also compliments this system with a package designed to create a stone base and finish cap for your exterior columns.

Next let’s talk about the Portsmouth Shake® Since the shake look has become a staple on most new homes it is no wonder that the Exterior Portfolio by Crane offers seven different styles. Whether you are looking for the natural beauty of Hand Split Shakes, the more rugged look of Hand Split Variegated Shakes, or the longer profile of the Staggered Shake they have your product and color. Each these products come in a more uneven rough split appearance. If you are looking for something a little more refined then Cedar Shake, Perfections Shake, or 8′ long Shake Sections should be more to your liking. These products display the look of a sawn wood shingle with a more evenly matched edge profile. Rounding out the line in a literal sense would be the Traditional Half Rounds. So you see no matter what style shake best suits your project you are sure to find the perfect answer here.

The last product series I am going to detail here is the Oracle™ Insulated vinyl siding series. Oracle comes in either a Quad 4″ Clapboard or a Triple 4.5″ Dutchlap profile. It boasts up to a 4.0 R value and a 45% noise reduction. It has a 17% better resistance to air infiltration than their standard products and a 300% increase in impact resistance.

I will round out the rest of the product lines in full detail at my web site where I encourage you browse for details on any home building or home remodeling subject. I will also provide you with a direct link to the Crane web site including its exclusive visual design center where you can place their siding on an image of your home.

As always I hope you have found this article informative, please leave me a message or comment and I will use your ideas to create further in depth product review articles from the perspective of a seasoned expert in the field.

My name is Jim Patrick, and I am an accomplished residential designer with hundreds of families enjoying the fruits of our mutual labor, but I also spend every day selling every aspect of building product to my clients.

Stop by my http://www.homebuilding-questions.com site and I’ll take you through each step of the process, whether you are building a new home or addition or doing some remodeling like a new kitchen or bathroom.
