Natural Stone Home Decorating – Essential Knowledge   no comments

Posted at 4:18 pm in Stones & Bricks

There are two major types of natural stone decorating, architectural designs, and home décor accessories. The former involves actually installing stone into the existing structure of the home, whether in a floor, facade, or hardware installation procedure. The latter involves the purchase of smaller, decorative and functional items.

Once you get past this distinction, you find stone broken down into many more specific categories based on the type of material used. The polished smooth surface of marble looks completely different from the rustic natural exterior of slate. In fact some people might not be able to tell that they are both stone. They also have far different tolerances as far as resistance to water damage, and the elements.

It is important to always choose the right material for whatever application you are developing. If you are setting up an outdoor environment, be certain to choose materials which can stand up to the elements. Marble will probably be a bad choice here, but materials such as granite or slate can often deal with wind and rain just fine, especially if they’ve been treated with a commercial sealing agent. This is as true of installed pathway tiles as it is of rustic drink coasters.

One of the great things about decorating with natural stone is that every single piece is a little bit different from any other. While you can get materials that tend to be more consistent, even these will all be somewhat unique in shade and hue. Meanwhile many multi-colored stones have such erratic differences that each one takes on its own unique personality.

In smaller home décor applications this can mean that your specific decorative piece is a one of a kind that is unlike anyone else’s in the entire world. In larger installations, you often can use this fact to arrange stone pieces in such a way, that you are actually participating in the creation of a living work of art.

Natural stone is a beautiful way to connect your home with the reality of the outside world. It is available for both installed applications, and in home décor pieces, allowing you a variety of options for using it to enhance your spaces.

This is another one of those “make at home” type things that I found somewhere on the internet and actually tried out. I can give you some actual, real feedback on its effectiveness and savings.

Just last week, I tried out some homemade toilet bowl cleaner. And believe it or not, it worked out quite well. I found the benefits to be many, the user-friendliness of it to be wonderful, and the savings seem to be there as well also.

This is what I found. The list of ingredients for my homemade toilet bowl cleaner call for:

1 ½ cups of white vinegar

1 cup of baking soda

¼ cup of salt

5-10 drops of essential oil

Basically, you pour everything in, mix it up a little with your toilet bowl brush, and then let it sit for 20 minutes. Then, go back, scrub down the bowl and flush. It’s that simple.

Before I get into the cost breakdown of this, let me tell you something. The “amounts” on this recipe simply seemed to be way too much to for one cleaning of your toilet bowl (unless of course, you have an extremely large or extremely dirty toilet bowl). Therefore, I eyeballed it pretty much, but I basically cut the amounts on this recipe in half.

Oh, and the essential oil thing really only seems to be for fragrance purposes. It says it serves an antibacterial purpose, but I would imagine that you could eliminate this as well and still have the same effect.

So, according to my calculations, using the homemade recipe would cost you about 24 cents per use. Using a store bought brand of toilet bowl cleaner would cost about 63 cents. This works out to approximately a 62% savings on your toilet bowl cleaning.

Now, in terms of dollars saved, is this going to make you a million dollars over the course of a year? Absolutely not. However, below, I listed out all of the benefits that I came across during the use of this homemade stuff.

Ease of use. As opposed to other homemade recipes that you actually have to mix up, with this one, you’re just pouring the ingredients into your bowl, so there is really no preparation time to make it or storage of it. This was a big plus to me.

–Also, now, rather than polluting the environment with an empty toilet bowl cleaner container every month or so, you will now only be throwing away the big gallon jug of white vinegar about once every three months. A benefit for the environment.

–Third, a lot of the commercial toilet bowl cleaners (especially the blue ones) can do harm to your toilet plumbing and pipes. Obviously, these ingredients are all natural, so you can eliminate that issue as well.

–And finally, the savings involved. Again, I won’t break the bank with this savings idea, but every penny helps.

Overall, I’d give this recipe an A+. I think the savings are minimal, but when you add everything up, it has many other benefits to be reaped.

Emergency Water Damage – What to Do and What Not to Do   no comments

Posted at 1:51 am in Cleaning Tips

Water damage inside a home tends to come from only two sources, Mother Nature and mechanical malfunctions. Whether it is from storms, rising rivers and lakes or plumbing leaks and sewer back-ups one fact will remain the same, time is of the essence. The sooner the water is removed and the area dried the better the chances are of getting out of the situation with the least amount of damage. The loss your property can be devastating but a health issue arising from improper cleanup procedures, in my opinion, is much more critical.

Depending on the amount of water that you are dealing with, clean up can range from a simple shop vac and a few fans to pumping machines, industrial grade dehumidification units, sanitizing and disinfecting. When massive flooding of the home has occurred it is always best to call on the professionals for an accurate evaluation. In the mean time, there a few things that can be done (and not done) to assure safety and the least amount of damage.

We will cover a few of the basics here.

The first and most obvious is to eliminate the source of water if possible such as turning off the main water line. If you are dealing with clean water it is typically safe to enter the home and initiate clean-up but only after the circuit breakers that supply power to the wet room or rooms have been turned off.

Unplug and remove any electrical devices that are in or near the affected area.

Remove as much water as possible with a wet/dry shop vac, mops and rags. Lift drapes off the floor, remove area rugs, and basically anything lying around that can be subject to water, especially newspapers, magazines and books since they can bleed ink and stain. Wipe down solid furniture, remove and air dry wet or damp couch cushions. Aluminum foil can be placed under furniture legs to prevent carpet stains.

If temperatures are over 60 degrees use a dehumidifier, fans and air conditioning to circulate air. Turn on the heat if the weather is cold to aid in the drying process.

Do not attempt cleanup yourself if you are dealing with any kind of sewerage water unless it is absolutely necessary. In this case be sure to wear rubber gloves and protective clothing, a respirator and goggles. When finished handling sewerage-contaminated items immediately remove your outerwear and either dispose of it or wash. Thoroughly scrub with a disinfectant soap. If you develop any adverse heath issues be sure to contact your doctor and make him aware of the situation. In the event that the HVAC system is readily accessible turn it off to prevent the spread of air-born contaminants.

Here are a few addition things to be aware of: Never use a household vacuum to remove water since electrical shock may occur along with damage to the unit. Stay out of rooms that have standing water and the electricity is still on. Do not use ceiling fans when the ceiling is wet. Stay off of wet surfaces as much as possible to avoid accidents and the possible spread of bacteria.

Granite For Class and Style   no comments

Posted at 4:35 am in Stones & Bricks

If building or remodeling your house, the first choice that comes to mind for countertops and flooring is granite, because it is most dependable, strong and long lasting. The natural beauty of granite stones is unmatched. Original granite comes in vibrant colors and has an extremely rich and shiny look.

Yes, granite is definitely more expensive than other countertop materials, but they last so long that in the long run they turn out to be far more cost effective and will retain their exclusiveness. Granite stones are harder than various other solid surface materials.

Taking care of granite is not really as tough as you may have imagined. Ensure that the granite that you are using is given a stone sealer coating that offers it a protective shield. Stone sealing is utilized by most people in the fabricating world. This will ensure that your countertops or floorings will remain clean and sparkling. This can be applied at regular intervals depending on your use.

When cleaning granite everyday it would be advisable to spray a diluted stone soap solution that penetrates into the granite pores to get rid of dust, dirt and grime. You then only have to wipe it off.

Other points in favor of using granite are that it is heat resistant and stain proof. So when using these stones for kitchen countertops you need not worry about placing hot vessels or pans directly on them.

Granite blends well with wooden décor, so it will even look good in rooms with wooden cabinets, cupboards, shelves and seating arrangements.

In the US granite is generally imported from Europe, Africa or Brazil where these stones abound in plenty in their natural form. There are many companies that deal in granites and Innovative’s Stonemark Granite is said to be a real good buy. And they even give you a fifteen year warranty on their products.

Whatever make of granite you buy, you can rest assured that you will have absolutely no cause to repent.

Stone mark granite is an excellent option for all your flooring requirements. You can view more such quality products at ShopAllThings

Website Feng Shui   no comments

LIGHT AND COLOUR

Luminous, tidy pages will convey benevolent chi. Darkly coloured pages, or (even worse) pages with begrimed coloration combination’s, are unfit. Bold use of color is beneficial, and stimulates the flow of ch’i. White and blue, representing air and water, are good coloration’s, although whatever inventive use of bold color should be positive. Meaningless flakes of color, or wishy-washy color com-poundings, will not be effective. Graphics should be clear and distinct. The messy dithering of colors that happens with JPEG compaction is awful feng shui.

LIFE AND MOVEMENT

Life and motion may be employed to fill out stagnant areas or break apart lengthy, straight lines. In interior design terms this could imply arranging flora* in the corners of rooms, or fish tanks against boring walls. On the internet, this could mean the addition of a few beautiful, natural-looking graphics. It doesn’t mean that you must add some genuinely annoying animated GIFs that repeat their sequence eternally. Take it from me, that’s unfavorable ch’i. More sites should include pages that have flowers growing on them, which adds a soothing contemplation of the natural world, and absorbs attention away from the inevitably angular nature of a web browser screen. Favorable ch’i just streams round those pages.

STILLNESS

Having said that, ch’i can course too quick, and you want areas of hush, or a focus which can lift the area. On the internet, these can be in the shape of a logo area which comes along on every page and which includes a navigational element.

SIMPLICITY

Load up your website with dozens of multimedia doodads and you will bear a ch’i tornado, which are good-for-nothing altogether. Mere, calming devices are a great deal better.

STRAIGHT LINES

The internet holds far too many straight lines. Ch’i does not stream smoothly around these pages, and the user’s reaction to their unvarying appearance causes them to become all the more stagnant.

NAVIGATION

The user must feel that it’s easy and intuitive to get about your website. If they find that they’ve reached a ‘dead end’, and have to utilize the ‘back’ button to escape, you’ve got a fatal stagnation of ch’i. If the user can float well through your pages to progress to wherever they’d like to be, that’s outstanding ch’i.

OTHER WAYS TO IMPROVE THE FENG SHUI OF YOUR WEBSITE

* Make certain it’s a appealing entrance area.

* Avert employing a hosting service supplier which has got a defective history – for instance, one which has hosted many broke down sites. This would produce defective feng shui even though, to ‘logical’ eyes, the hosting service provider isn’t in any case responsible for these failures.

* Do not align all elements against the sides of the screen.

* Ch’i flourishes in harmonious and enjoyable surroundingses. Contriving websites which simply appear ‘businesslike’ won’t give pleasure and a healthy circulation of ch’i.

* Simply have a small amount of carefully-selected hyperlinks. Abundant listings of links are dead in the visual aspect of things, and the ch’i rapidly escapes through them.

Not everyone has faced the problem of having moles everywhere in their yards, their gardens, etc. They get in there and they dig holes everywhere, causing you so much grief. 2) You Have Options

There are several ways to kill a mole, and some are better than others. There’s a reason why there are so many options available for you – these things are annoying to everyone that is plagued by them! So, don’t think you have to try all the options when you are trying to get rid of moles trapping is the most effective. Some of the other remedies are baits, repellants and poisons.

Termite Signs – 8 Surefire Signs of a Termite Problem   no comments

Posted at 7:49 pm in Pest Control

1) Mud Tubes: Mud tubes are a major sign for termites. Mud tubes are about a pencil width thick, usually on concrete, traveling from the ground to the nearest wood. They’re easy to spot. It almost looks like your house is growing roots. If you’re on a slab foundation, look around the outside of the house for mud tubes traveling from the ground to the siding. If you’re on a crawl space foundation, look around the outside of the foundation and inside the crawl space. Wood should never be directly touching the ground because it attracts termites and gives them a way to travel up to the house without building mud tubes.

2) Tiny Holes in Wood: Infested wood is an easy to spot sign. You might notice this wood on decks and other outdoor wood structures, which are particularly susceptible to termite damage. If you notice problems outside, the whole house should probably be treated.

3) Tiny Bubbles in Paint: If termites have eaten the wood underneath paint, then the paint will form small blisters.

4) Sawdust: You might notice sawdust, particularly around door frames or anywhere it’s dark and moist. If you notice sawdust, look around to see if you can find any tiny holes or odd looking wood.

5) Termite Wings: After termites swarm, they immediately shed their wings. If termites are present, you should notice a large amount of small wings.

6) Wood Sounds Hollow: If other signs like tiny holes, sawdust, or tiny wings are present, take a screw driver and tap on surrounding wood. Try poking any hollow sounding wood. If termites have caused damage, your screwdriver will puncture the wood with ease. You might even see live termites.

7) Live Termites: Typically, termites won’t be out in the open; however, you might uncover some while searching for them. They’re smaller than most people expect, about the size of a grain of rice, and a very light, almost translucent, yellow.

8) Termite Swarms: Finally, you may actually witness a termite swarm, in which thousands of termites will fly around the inside of your home for about 30 minutes. Swarming is part of the termites’ reproductive cycle and most commonly occurs after rain on the warm days of Spring.

Get a New Kitchen Look on a Budget   no comments

With the recent economic downturn, most families have little, if any, extra money. The kitchen is often the most expensive room in the house to remodel, so what do you do if it’s in desperate need of a facelift? But there are so many things that are affordable that you can either do yourself or have done at a reasonable price. If you want to transform the look of your kitchen without spending a fortune, here are a few easy steps you can take.

The obvious place to start is to paint your walls and ceiling. You can really make a difference in the room by changing the colors around. A soft yellow or pastel peach, for instance, won’t be overbearing but will still add color and vibrancy to the décor. Or to really make the look pop, paint the baseboards a contrasting color.

  • If your cabinets are showing their age, it’s time to fix them up. This type of small touch in a décor can really make a large impact. Your local home supply store should offer all sorts of new pulls to choose from. Look for pulls with pretty patterns on them to add a touch of color to your décor.
  • With lighting fixtures, you can go for a whole new look. Have the fixtures you have now been there for years? Chances are, they are probably outdated. Compared to having to move the electrical box, lighting fixtures will save you a bundle. Choose fixtures that fit in the same place as your current light does.
  • It may be time to update your window decors. Are all of your kitchen and dining room windows hung with mini blinds? Consider getting rid of them altogether and hanging some delicate sheers in their place. If you just happen to prefer blinds, then consider the vertical variety. For a more elegant look, you might use satin sheets to create your own swags. You have endless options for your window decorations, so don’t be afraid to get a little creative.

If you don’t mind painting, with a little imagination you can create a unique look that will others will envy. You want your home to be your own special place, reflecting your tastes and personality. Originality is the name of the game if you’re looking to create a décor that’s uniquely yours.

It’s not difficult to transform the look and feel of your kitchen without breaking your budget. You want a look that family and friends can enjoy in comfort, since the kitchen is often the most used room in the home. You’ll be amazed at what a difference a few of these simple tricks can make! You can make your kitchen look as though it cost thousands for only a few hundred dollars, and no one will know any better.

Accomplish Spring Yard Cleanup With a Compact Tractor   no comments

Posted at 2:20 pm in Yard Equipment

Spring is a busy season with lawn and garden cleanup taking much of our outdoor time. By selecting the right tractor and equipment to get the work done, you can accomplish more in less time while still having time for the outdoors activities we all love. Keeping in mind a few select features of compact tractors can make outdoor spring cleanup a snap.

A compact tractor with specialty attachments has by far the greatest benefit when it comes to selecting the best yard equipment. Be sure to check out the attachments offered with any tractor you are considering. Find a tractor that offers a wide variety of attachment choices that hook to one power unit and you will be set to tackle many yard tasks in much less time. You can get loads of use in the spring season from attachments like a tiller for working up new gardens, working in compost or tilling under vegetation from the previous year. Create a clean edge on driveways, sidewalks and landscaping with an edger attachment. A broom is a handy attachment for clearing old brush or leaves from walkways and driveways. Slip scoops are great for moving dirt, mulch or gravel as you spruce up your property. Maybe your turf needs aerated; look for a tractor that offers an aeration attachment for an added advantage.

Selecting a tractor with a compact design gives you the added benefit of working around the yard in tight areas where large tractors can not go. It will allow you to move mulch around flower beds, move dirt and work on sidewalks very easily without destroying the rest of your yard. A compact tractor frame will easily work in small areas like barn aisles, where using a blade or slip scoop really comes in handy. When mowing between trees or around flower beds it is very useful to have a compact tractor for maneuvering efficiently.

While there are many choices of yard cleanup equipment available, a compact tractor that offers specialty attachments is a very practical choice. Imagine using one tractor with several attachments around your home for your spring yard cleanup. Yard work can be fun with the right equipment and will allow you to spend more time on outdoor activities for the whole family.

Small Kitchen Remodeling Tips – 4 Helpful Tips to Make Your Small Kitchen Look Bigger   no comments

Posted at 1:45 am in Kitchen Remodeling

If you have a small kitchen and you want to make it look bigger than it normally is, you can. This article looks at three very important tips that can help in giving that small kitchen of yours the big look it needs and make it actually more spacious than it really is.

1. Use light colors: As hard as it seems to believe there are certain colors that help to give the visual impression of more space. And these are light colors. So, if you need to make your small kitchen appear bigger, use light colors instead of dark colors. Dark colors are said to reduce the size of a room or kitchen and are therefore not the best types to use when you want your kitchen to look bigger.

2. Use customized cabinets: Using customized cabinets help you save space in your kitchen more than if you had to buy and install just about any cabinet. By using customized ones you make them based on the space you have available. Customized in this sense means that they are made to fit the particular space in your kitchen and not the other way around. In this case they have to be made after the measurements of your kitchen are taken, so that they will be made really to fit.

3. Use customized furniture: Since you don’t have too much space in your kitchen, using customized furniture helps you save space. Such customized-furniture will be built mainly to take up particular space in the kitchen. With this also, the exact measurements of the space where they will be have to be taken and the furniture made to really fit into that space.

4. Maximize storage space: Ensure that every space is used in such a way that it serves dual function. For example, the bottom of the sink can be used as a spot for storing things. Since you don’t have a lot of space you shouldn’t waste any. Every space that is available will serve one purpose or another.

Do the above and you will be shocked to see your previously small kitchen now looking much bigger than it really is. And yes, it will then be able to take more things than it did before doing the above. And trust me – many of your friends who previously told you that your kitchen is too small will marvel at how big it now looks after you have done the above. And who knows – you might end up becoming a kind of “go to person” when it comes to making a small kitchen look big without necessarily increasing the space.
