Not Just in Beds, They Are Everywhere! Top Three Places Where Bedbugs Love to Stay   no comments

Posted at 9:50 pm in Pest Control

Bedbugs, in general, love staying in dark, moist places that are frequented by warm-blooded animals, especially humans. Aside from the home, bed bugs can also proliferate in places that we normally think as safe.

First, bedbugs love to stay in seats in movie houses. Imagine sitting at that comfortable and sleek-looking recliner chair, watching your favorite movie, and then some random critter bites you. Bed bugs love to stay in movie houses that are not well-kept, especially those with seats that are made of fabric, and also on lounge chairs that have crevices where they can hide.

It is important to make sure that the cinemas that you frequently visit are diligently maintained by staff. Cinemas are more prone to bedbugs because of the sheer number of people who use them. Furthermore, since it is constantly dark inside, it is much easier for bedbugs to hide out of anyone’s sight.

Second, bedbugs love to stay in hotels and motels. When one goes out on a long journey, the primary consideration for a hotel or motel stopover is the price. Usually, we would choose the cheapest place so that we can save more money.

However, low-cost motels can afford to charge a small amount usually because their janitorial departments are not very active, or because they spend very little with regard to maintenance. Furthermore, this is also a place that people go to a lot, so that those who live in homes that are infested with bedbugs can accidentally bring bedbugs that cling on their clothes.

Lastly, bedbugs love to stay in rental cars. Cars are perfect for bedbugs – there are so many nooks and crannies that they can hide at. This is especially true for rental cars that are not frequently vacuumed and cleaned.

Before renting a car, make sure that you are dealing with a reputable car rental agency. This does not only avoid concerns with the paperwork, but also in avoiding diseases that can be caused by getting bitten by bedbugs.

Joseph hates bedbugs and his favorite ways to get rid of them are diatomaceous earth and cedar oil!

Choose the Right Swimming Pool Filter   no comments

Posted at 5:21 pm in Pools & Spas

Owning an in ground swimming pool is a great way to cool off and relax during those hot summer days. Keeping your pool clean, however, demands a great deal of maintenance, as cleaning pools is a very hard job. There are many aspects of keeping a pool clean, but the most important one is a swimming pool filter.

Pool filters are the most useful and easiest way to keep a swimming pool clean so it lasts for a long time. In addition, they are not too hard on a wallet, and do not need to be cleaned very often. This is beneficial when there is not a lot of time available to maintain it. When choosing one, there are three types that are used: cartridge, sand, and DE filter.

Cartridge filters are the easiest, and the most inexpensive filter to use for an in ground pool. They work by pushing water through the filter, and as the water travels through, the filter snatches hold of the debris. This type of filter does not clog up easily, and will last for a long time. Remember that pool filters still need to be cleaned, and cartridge filters should be cleaned once or twice every season.

DE filters are a unique type of filter that uses diatomaceous earth, and have the ability to filter out small pieces of debris. This type of filter is reinforced with plastic grids made of a plastic like substance, that lies over the fabric. The diatomaceous earth is used to screen the plastic grid, and to filter out debris from the pool.

The last kind of filter is the sand filter, which uses a unique type of graded sand. It works by pushing the water through a tank and diffuser, and as water goes through the sand, the filter takes hold of the debris. The water then continues to go to the bottom of the filter without debris, and is then delivered back up to the pool.

Finding a good swimming pool filter is an essential tool for keeping a pool clean. With a filter, you can enjoy your swimming pool, without having to clean your pool out too often. Out of these three filter options, there is a fit for every pool and every budget. Having a pool filter is a great investment, and the easiest and most useful way to keep your pool clean.

About UPVC French Doors and Their Benefits   no comments

Posted at 7:33 pm in Doors

There is a surprisingly large market for doors. When you think about it though this makes sense because every house needs at least one. A large supply of different types of doors has made it hard for the consumer to select. I am going to try and help by talking about UPVC French doors.

Some people find getting a door to fit an unusual size difficult. This shouldn’t really be a problem when it comes to UPVC French doors. They come in all shapes and sizes so you are bound to find one that does fit. Please bear in mind that if the size is very unusual then you are likely to pay more for it.

So we have the size sorted but what about its look… how good will it look in your house? Well here you are in complete control. I am sure you will find something that matches the personality of the house because there are just so many styles. It always surprises people how many styles there are. This is your biggest problem when it comes to UPVC French doors.

When I found out how easy it was to look after UPVC doors I was sold. I don’t like having to do work around the house. I like to spend my time relaxing. If I had bought a wood door then once it was installed I would have to worry about treating it. I also know that no matter how much I treated it would eventually rot and I would have to go through the same thing again.

I know that you will be concerned about safety so I will mention that here. UPVC patio doors are one of the most secure on the market. These days there is so much technology that goes into them and all aimed at security.

I hope I have given you enough material to make up you mind about UPVC French doors. Take some time to consider if they are right for you.

How to Program a Garage Opener Remote   no comments

Posted at 4:14 pm in Garage & Storage

If you happen to have misplaced your old garage opener remote, or are interested in adding a new one to your arsenal, you will need to know the ins and outs of programming the device to work with the opener. After all, a remote without the proper instructions to relay is pretty useless. In this article, we will outline the steps to programming your brand new remote.

Step 1 – Locate the area where the antenna protrudes from the opening motor and take a look around until you find the learn button. In some cases, you may be required to remove a small lens cap. Other units will have a wall mounted receiver which holds the antenna.

Step 2 – Regardless of your unit, it will have a learn function. This usually takes shape in the form of a button. Push this button. A small indicator light should illuminate and glow, signally that you have roughly 30 seconds to re-program your remote.

Step 3 – Find the learn button on the remote and hold it down until the light on the motor blinks. Once the blinking has commenced, stop holding the learn button.

Step 4 – If you happen to have a switch opener, simply remove the cover from the motor unit, or receiver. You should see a section of 8, 9, or 12 switches, each with three positions.

Step 5 – Locate the battery cover on the remote and find the switches. Next, match up each switch on the motor to the switches on the remote. Each switch should be in the exact same position as the corresponding switch on the opposite device. You may require a small pen or screwdriver to maneuver the switch placement to the spots needed.

Step 6 – Next, close the battery cover and return all parts and pieces to their proper places. Test you garage door. As long as all the switches have been matched correctly, it will work as it should.

Recessed Lighting – Reviewing the Basics   no comments

Posted at 4:09 pm in Home Lighting

A recessed light is one which is fixed into a hole in the ceiling or wall and creates the impression that light is bursting forth from a hole in the ceiling or wall depending on where it is installed. They are perfect for creating a cozy setting while providing either directed light in the way of a focused spotlight or a wide light washing over a large area.

Recessed lighting provides an unobtrusive source of light for several uses. It can provide task oriented lighting when directed over your computer desk, or the reading desk, or provide soft and well diffused source of light for the living room, and all the while remaining discreetly out of sight in the nooks and crannies of the house.

The purpose for which you are installing the light fixture is critical as it helps determine what kind of trim you need to purchase. The trim is the part of the fixture that determines the kind of light you shall get in the end. There are three main types:

· Eyeballs: these can help you get directed lighting and are generally used where you need to generate task oriented lighting.

· Reflectors: these are used to maximize the light output of your recessed lighting. This is used when your objective is to get as much light intensity as possible from your light fixture.

· Baffles: these are used when you want a soft diffused light from your fixture. It is ideal when the purpose is to get a general or ambient lighting.

Recessed lights can provide a good source of light while adding a lineal feel to the room. This is because they fit into the overall lay out of the room while still being able to give directed light for highlighting certain areas of the house such as art pieces.

There are several recessed lights for your use, but it is critical that you pick the right model for the job. Some are designed for easy installation during remodeling and you will only need to cut a hole into your ceiling, while others are best used when carrying out actual initial construction.

Here are some tips to consider when using recessed lighting, add these to your personal style and need and you can’t go wrong.

· Do not use too many recessed lights in a row down a room, it takes a lot out of the cozy feel you could have created.

· Use recessed lights near walls of a small room to create an illusion that the room is bigger than it actually is.

· Take time when placing task oriented lights, so that it does not end up casting a shadow over the intended work space.

· Install lights a few inches in front of the object you want to light up, this ensures that the light falls on the object and not few feet off it.

However, it must be said that recessed lighting is not ideal for every situation, for instance walls and ceilings with ornate finishing should not be drilled into to place a light fixture. Take time to consider your needs and the overall theme of the room and house before drilling into your ceiling.

Installing Manufactured Stone Veneer   no comments

Posted at 3:44 pm in Stones & Bricks

Manufactured stone veneer can be used to greatly enhance the look and feel of a project. These hand crafted thin veneer stones are cast from natural stone in a process that captures the natural elegance and beauty of genuine stone. In this article we will be discussing some basic step-by-step installation procedures that can help with your next stone veneer project.

Determining Type of Substrate: There are several types of substrates that manufactured stone veneer can be applied to if the surface is properly prepared. The most commonly used are plywood, cement board and CMU. Varies substrates require different preparation processes. It is important to use the right preparation techniques and tools for each project. (Note: Review the stone manufacturers detailed installation instructions before installation any project)

Applying Weather Resistant Barrier: It is recommended that you install two separate layers of WRB in shingle fashion, starting at the bottom of the wall. The upper layers of WRB should overlap the top of the lower layers by a minimum of two inches. The WRB should be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. (Note: This step may not be required for some installations. Please review your stone manufacturers detailed installation instructions.) Recommended Material: #15 felt or Grade D paper

Applying Galvanized Metal Lath: Lath should be installed horizontally with the cups up, and should overlap a minimum of one inch on the horizontal and vertical seams. Around inside and outside corners, lath should be attached every six inches allowing a 16 inch overlap around corners. Recommended Material: 2.5 lb. or 3.4 lb. self-furring corrosion resistant lath

Applying Scratch Coat: Apply a nominal ½” thick layer of mortar over the lath, ensure the lath is completely covered with mortar to allow for scoring of the surface. The mortar should be applied with sufficient pressure and thickness to fully embed the lath. Once the mortar is thumb-print hard, scratch the surface horizontally with a notched trowel or scarifier to create a scratch coat. Recommended Tools: Notched trowel or scarifier

Snapping Chalk Lines: After the scratch coat dries (usually 48 hours) and before the stone is applied, chalk lines are snapped across the wall for the purpose of proper horizontal alignment of stone. The chalk lines are necessary in keeping the courses of stone straight and level during installation, which provides for a beautiful and professional result. Recommended Tools: Chalk Line

Mortar Coverage (Back of Stone): Cover the entire back of the stone with approximately ½” of mortar. This will ensure a proper adhesion between the stone and the scratch coated wall surface. Please follow the manufactures recommendations regarding mortar mixture formulas. (Note: Weather conditions can affect the adhesion of mortar to the scratch coat. Please review the stone manufacturers detailed installation instructions for different weather environments.) Recommended Material: Polymer modified Type-S mortar / Recommended Tools: Trowel

Installing the First Course: When installing the first course, start at the bottom corner of a wall installing one or two corner stones first. Corner pieces have a long and a short return, these returns should alternate in opposite directions on the wall’s corner staying within the 8″ chalk lines. Continue the project by installing flats off of these corner pieces. Work the stones into the wall with a side to side motion to create a bond. Each additional course that is installed will always begin with a cornerstone.

Cutting Stones to Fit: Manufactured stone veneer is easily shaped or cut as desired. This enables you to fit stones quickly into place, insuring a natural looking wall with tight mortar joints. (Note: Always wear safety glasses while cutting stone veneer.) Recommended Tools: Makita 4.5″ handheld disc grinder with diamond blade, or nippers.

Grouting the joints: If grouting is required, use a grout bag to fill in the joints. Try to avoid smearing grout on the face of the stone. If grout does come in contact with the face of the stone, use a clean damp sponge to remove the residue.(note: make sure sponge is clean to avoid smearing grout elsewhere) Once the grout is thumb print hard, use a metal joint tool or wood stick to finish joints. Use a whisk broom to sweep away any left over debris. Recommended Tools: Metal joint tool or wood stick

Grout Color and Style: The color of the grout joint has a dramatic impact on the final appearance of the installation. From varying depth raked joints to full brushed joints, there are several grouting techniques that also impact the final appearance.

For information on flashing details or specialty installations please consult the stone manufacturer for detailed installation instructions.

Outdoor Wicker Furniture – Go Synthetic   no comments

Posted at 3:18 pm in Patios & Decks

Wicker isn’t a material used in lovely, natural-looking furniture, despite what many people think. Wicker is actually the process of weaving that’s used to make the furniture, and a term used for the finished pieces. The furniture can be made with things like rattan reeds, cane, man-made paper fiber or today’s new synthetic materials.

If you have some old wicker furniture made of natural materials, you’ll save yourself grief if you keep it indoors. While it might look lovely on your patio, it’s just not meant to weather the elements. You can spray it with sealants and try to waterproof it, but the very weaving that gives it the signature look means there are going to be thousands of tiny spots that you can’t get to with your sealant that will wick in moisture when it rains and start to ruin the materials from the inside out.

Wicker made from natural materials should be kept indoors if you want it to last. Once the natural fibers start to mold and mildew, getting rid of the mildew and keeping it from coming back can take a long time, if it’s possible at all. Choose synthetic wicker made from something like polyethylene. This will give you all the beauty of wicker without the worry about damage or headaches of trying to restore it once it starts to fade or rot.

Synthetic furniture is also called all-weather and recyclable wicker. You can buy chaise lounges, tables, benches and just about any type of furniture made with these synthetic materials. Be sure the furniture comes with outdoor cushions that are made to weather the elements, and avoid the models that have a distinct shine or glare to them.

The synthetic materials that are shiny don’t have enough texture to look authentic, and they’re probably made of materials that break down into the environment, like PVC. It’s cheaper than some other materials and can have a distinct chemical smell that is the material putting off elements into the air. It breaks down into elements that aren’t environmentally friendly, and it’s not particularly attractive compared to materials used in wicker like polyethylene. Polyethylene is used in more expensive pieces and is dull and natural-looking, often with a distinct texture to mimic natural fibers.

If you’re in doubt about the materials used, just make sure that they’re UV protected to keep the color from fading, and that you’re purchasing from a high quality company with a brand recognized in this type of furniture. That will help ensure you get good synthetic outdoor wicker furniture that’s planet-friendly and going to last for a long, long time.

Homeowners’ Guide to Garage Door Replacement   no comments

Posted at 5:55 pm in Doors

If replacing that dented, worn out, dangerous garage door is at the top of your to-do list, you’re in for a treat! Today’s models are more beautiful and affordable than ever, and the right one will enhance your home’s curb appeal, provide added security, and make your life a whole lot easier. Here is a short guide to what to look for in home garage door replacement.

Style

  • Raised Panel: This type of door is the default choice for most spec homes because it is a sound, all-purpose style that seems to complement just about any type of house. You can choose from windowless models or opt for more stylish window inserts that are attractive and allow natural light into your garage area even when the door is closed.
  • Carriage House: This style is extremely popular right now because it blends the traditional look of yesteryear with updated pizazz and modern features for today’s homes. They are recognized by their distinctive “barn” design with vertical and diagonal lines, and are often made from treated wood for an even richer look.
  • Contemporary: Decidedly modern in both looks and materials used, this type of door is perfect for minimalistic contemporary architecture. They are often made of glass panels that resemble French doors, or simple flat panels that can be painted to blend in with surrounding walls. Many homeowners choose this style to make a statement, and opt for painting theirs a bold color instead.

Materials

The material you choose will depend largely on your budget as well as the look you are going for. Traditionalists will often select wood stained in rich colors, while money-conscious consumers will opt for steel. Although aluminum was popular a few decades ago, it simply does not enjoy as long a life span and is more likely to dent or even buckle. Those on a budget are wise to pay a little extra for steel: it will pay off in the long run. For optimum value, insist on steel with a gauge between 24 and 26.

More than ever before, homeowners have a chance to make a real statement with their choice of doors thanks to the wide selection available on the market today. To make sure it is installed correctly and safely, it is wise to have the work done by a Utah garage doors specialist or professional in the state where you live.

Posted at 5:41 pm in Pest Control

Rats are the ultimately famous pests that one could ever think of. They can be so tiny but amass to thousands quickly or grow bigger than expected. Some can even be mistaken for a cat. Either way, these creatures are deemed as a nuisance. They are famous for causing damage to your woodwork at home, eating boxed cereal and even destroying farm crops. They live in the sewers and carry serious diseases that could border on fatal. They do more harm than good. So if calling the pest control is your solution of choice, the most probable process of eliminating them is through killing. Chemical poisons are the most common. The use of rat poison is probably the most well known way to get rid of them, among others. But animal advocates have argued over the different options, stating that all of these are inhumane. Thinking of safer and more humane ways, people have come up with the idea of a humane rat trap.

No matter how irritating they are, rats still deserve to be treated the right way. While it may be true that all they do is pester humans, it is not a viable reason to justify killing them as a rightful thing to do. A humane rat trap was designed ironically to trap a very annoying animal in the most humane way possible – that is without taking the life out of it. Even the peanut butter and plaster of Paris balls are considered inhumane, because its end stage still results in a decomposing rat corpse.

The most common example of a humane rat trap is the tiny mouse cage specifically designed to lure and catch a rodent. Bait is placed inside and a one way door is provided. Once the furry little fellow crawls in, the door shuts and locks. But the rat would not wonder about it as it is too busy nibbling on its bait.

They say that this is the proper way to treat a pest. Trap them without hurting or killing them. Once they are trapped, they can be set free in an area that is far from your home. Setting them free in your backyard is like taking them for a walk in the park. They can easily come back due to their homing instincts. They are like Hansel and Gretel following the trail that they left when they got lost in the woods.

A humane rat trap would be your best option for a household invasion. Infestations involving a wider scope such as farms would probably need the expertise of a pest controller, which, unfortunately, utilizes ways that are apparently inhumane. Since their problem is more extensive, the aim is not just to kill a rat but to prevent them from further propagation because they can and they will breed. Farmhouses can just be the perfect spot for their breeding ground especially if left unkempt or abandoned, and setting up a humane trap could just be useless.

Using a humane rat trap in and around your home is the most ethical way to catch these little critters. For mice, try using a cheap little humane mouse trap to catch the mice and release them safe and sound outdoors.
