UPVC Windows Will Ensure You Never Waste Energy   no comments

Posted at 3:16 pm in Windows

Governments around the world are making it clear that conventional energy supplies are starting to dry up and urging us to contribute to energy saving more frequently. Those who continually over rely on their heating and electricity are going to be hit by very expensive energy bills for the considerable future and if you do not want to be one of those people, then you need to assess how you are going to improve your energy efficiency.

One of the quickest and affordable solutions is to have double glazing in Leeds installed by a reputable supplier of uPVC windows in Leeds. Much double glazing in Bradford is energy rated and you will find that ‘A’ rated windows will allow virtually no heat to leave a home through the glass. This means that any heat generated will continue to stay present for a considerable amount of time, so that you do not need to have your heating on constantly. This means a reduction in energy bills, as well as an increasingly energy efficient home.

Old windows tend to develop gaps and cracks over time, especially timber windows, and you would be surprised at the amount of heat that gets lost through them. Frames become tired and worn, whereas with uPVC windows, they are extremely durable and long lasting, looking as good as new for years to come. You will also notice a difference in the look of your home when you have new windows installed as they will brighten up the appearance of it.

So, next time the government stresses the need for everyone to become more energy efficient within their homes, you can sit back safe in the knowledge that you are doing your bit for the environment. Something which will benefit future generations for decades and centuries to come.

Window Replacement Guide – Learn About Maximum Window Efficiency   no comments

Posted at 3:40 pm in Windows

Before you can appreciate just how much a window can save you on your utility bills, you must understand the actual working of an energy efficient window. This window replacement guide will attempt to help you in this understanding. The theory is fairly straightforward: windows that are designed to be energy efficient are capable of slowing the heat transfer process between the inside of your house and the outdoors. We all know that heat travels from warm to cold spaces. In this way, the window becomes an agent of energy loss. During the winter, the warmth inside the house tends to dissipate out through the window and during the warmer season, the hot air outside tries to rush into your house via the same window as well.

Windows are central to the heat transfer process because they don’t provide as good insulation as other parts of your wall assembly. For example roofs, floors and walls are better insulated against heat loss. The old single pane windows or inadequately installed double pane windows, or cracks on the window or frames are all prime candidates to facilitate this process. To exacerbate the matter, even the best-sealed windows also allow some form of heat loss through the glass, as the glass is a natural conductor of heat through conduction. This windows replacement guide will explain the technologies used to lower air flow and subsequently heat transfer.

These are the glazing technique, low-U values, low-E coatings, as well as gases like argon or krypton between panes. As a result, these efficient windows will block the cold of winter away, while keeping you cool during the hot season. Additionally, this guide will also deal with how to avoid the condensations formed inside the windows. The performance indicator of an energy-efficient window is down to the construction of the window frame and a spacer material, and the object used to separate the main window glass and the individual frames of glass within the pane.

If you are serious in obtaining a LEED certification for your household, then it is imperative for you to know that correct windows choice can enhance your qualification. LEED accreditation is awarded based on window’s size, solar heating gain, U-factor and a host of other considerations.

Glazing

Glazing is the word used to define the glass in a window. A double-glazed window describes two panes window; triple-glazed contains three. An “energy-glazed” window has a layer of lamination and a gas filled within the panes of glass. The reduction in solar gain goes is proportional to the numberamount[/size] of glazing. If the solar gain is overly high, carpet, furniture and floors tend to fade easily and you need more energy for cooling to offset the solar gain; still, a decent amount of solar gain is necessary to counter the cold of winter. A double-glazed can trigger a 10 percent reduction in solar gain; triple-glazing by 20 percent. This windows replacement guide urges that households with single-glazed or single-pane windows upgrade to double- or triple-glazed windows. It will make a world of difference for your utility bills.

Low-E

Low-emissivity (low-E) coating also restricts the amount of energy transfer through the window. This coating is a transparent lamination that applies itself onto the window pane directly. It can be coated on either the inside surfaces (surfaces on opposing ends) or the exterior. Low-E coatings facilitates passing through of sun light but can cut down the heat transfer process via the window glass. In addition, businesses have also made available low-E squared and low-E cubed, which are effectively the extensions of low-E coatings and denotes two or three layers of coatings of low-E respectively.

There are two variations of low-E coatings, i.e. soft and hard types. Soft-coat low-E is comparatively not as robust and it can disintegrate under prolonged exposure to moisture and air. Conversely, while hard low-E coatings are able to withstand harsher conditions, their energy efficiencies are not comparable to those of soft coatings. As per guideline provided by U.S. Department of Energy, low-E coated (both soft and hard variations) windows are typically priced around 10% – 15% more than conventional windows, which more than compensate the 30 to 50 percent enhancement in energy loss reduction. Low-E coated windows have come a long way from its early days of make-to-order status to become standard on windows.

U-Value

As pointed out earlier in this windows guide, R-value defines the efficiency of insulation of ceilings, walls, etc.; its reading is in direct relationship with the extent or effectiveness of the insulation. However, it is not practical to use R-value alone to measure windows insulation. They are different in the sense that they are subject to several external factors, such as wind, rain, sunlight, inside and outside air temperatures, just to name some of them. It is only natural that a different measurement system is applied on to windows. This measurement system is called U-value, also known as U-factor.

The U-value here is a more useful calculation of heat loss via the window, or heat transfer. (R-values may still be listed on windows on sales, but the values have no real significance as they are just readings on the center portion of the window, thus not an accurate measurement for the entire window.) When one is referring to U-value, the lower the reading, the higher the energy efficiency is. In cold weathers, U-value of.35 or lower is preferred. Windows with multi-glazing and have krypton or argon filled are also effective in reducing heat loss and generally have low U-values.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient(SHGC)

The SHGC is an indicator used to measure how well solar radiation is blocked from the sun. Lower reading of SHGC means less solar heat is transmitted across. The ENERGY STAR program includes guidelines and criteria for doors and windows for three climate zones in the U.S. Manufacturers would be in a better position to tell if the product is ENERGY STAR-certified or not. For ENERGY STAR certification criteria, all products are required to be rated, certified, and labeled for both SHGC as well as U-value according to the procedures of the NFRC (or short for National Fenestration Rating Council) or able to satisfy the ENERGY STAR qualification criteria in at least one of the climate zones.

How to Select the Best Window Treatments for Your Home   no comments

Posted at 5:26 pm in Interior Decorating,Windows

When decorating a home, most people don’t think much about the way the windows look. This is unfortunate, as the window treatments you choose can transform the look from dull to dazzling. And your choices extend far beyond traditional mini blinds and curtains.

Of course, there are other things you need to keep in mind when it comes to choosing window treatments for your home. Two other things you need to consider are privacy and the level of sunlight that comes in. In addition, you want to be sure to choose something that isn’t going to clash and rather will flow with the rest of your décor.

Some Reasonable Choices
The first step in choosing window treatments depends largely on what room you want them for. For the bedroom, for example, you only want a minimal amount of light to come in, so you may want a shade or blind that’s darker-colored or made of wood. But many people prefer sunshine and brightness in the kitchen, so for that room you may want to go with a lightweight shade or mini blind. You can choose either vertical or horizontal blinds, depending on your personal preference. Or instead you could go with a light-colored wood shutter that you can open up, giving you the full benefit of natural sunlight.

For the living area, you’re going to want to go with window treatments with more color. You won’t believe the difference adding color around the windows makes in the look of your home. It’s up to you, whether you want to choose colored shade made of luxurious fabrics or vinyl. Just be sure to consider your privacy and lighting needs, as well as the price, when you go to purchase your window treatments.

Privacy Counts as Well
Some people want to know that no one can see inside their home at night, which allows them to feel more secure. For this reason, some homeowners choose to hang a security shade, which is usually available at specialty stores. A custom roller shade with a one-way view is made of perforated material. When this shade is pulled down over the window, any would-be intruder cannot see in, yet the light still penetrates the room and you are able to see out.

If you treasure privacy in the evenings but still love the look of sheer curtains, don’t worry, as it’s possible to have both. Simply use sheer curtains that are three times wider than the window. This way, the gathers are so dense that it blocks anyone from seeing in. Voile and batiste are both great fabrics for this type of curtain.

Size Plays a Role
Do you have an extremely large window? If that window is 6 or 7 feet wide, then blinds and draperies might be your best option. First install panels of blinds across the width of the window, and then add style and color to the look by hanging some richly textured drapes. The blinds will provide all the light control and privacy you need, while the draperies work to dress up the room.

If this large window is taking up nearly an entire wall, then you also have the option of installing a track across it’s entire width. Then you can close your drapes or curtains partially around the window or open them up completely to expose the entire wall and window. You’ll be sure to attract attention in the room with this truly unique look.

Today’s window treatments are wonderfully versatile, allowing you to meet all your privacy, lighting and style needs. Thus, you can choose something that will give you the amount of light you want, the nighttime privacy you need, and the extra punch of style you desire.

Should You Replace Sash Windows With Double Glazing?   no comments

Posted at 4:28 pm in Windows

Living in a period townhouse for over fifteen years I recently carried out a series of decorating and improvement projects which got me thinking about my lovely sash windows. Quite simply, my dilemma was should I tear them out and replace with double glazing?

My home whilst very well built is nearly 100 years old and as such suffers from a number of symptoms which shall we say are age related. The main one for me is that it tends to be cold which at my time of life is not ideal.

So being a person of action I got busy and went about tackling the cold by undertaking the following work;

1) Roof insulation – loft insulation is a more accurate description, the fact is that homes can lose up to 15% of their heat through the roof, which as well as making the place cold will also mean you spend more on heating.

2) Door seals and floor insulation – Basically I went around my home using a variety of foam based products to fill gaps and seal door edges.

Whilst very effective addressing these two areas was not going to be enough as my lovely period windows rattled in the wind and definitely needed attention. But I had read somewhere that replacing sash windows with modern double glazed units was a bad idea as it spoilt the character of a property and could even reduce its value.

I mentioned earlier that I am a person of action so I decided to get stuck in and see if I could find a solution. I went to my PC and typed double glazing Nottingham into a search engine and found a couple of local companies who look established and seem to have lots of good customer testimonials.

Quite simply I discussed my concerns with them and asked about potential solutions. I was amazed to discover that there are such things as sash windows built out of modern UPVC which would deliver two benefits to my properties. The first benefit being that they would ensure that the character of the property was not spoilt in anyway thus retaining its look and value. Secondly and more importantly I would have a properly insulated home with low maintenance windows.

Security Shutters   no comments

Posted at 10:43 pm in Windows

How do security shutters keep your home safe? Part of owning a home is keeping it safe from unwanted intruders, whether you are home or on a vacation. Your windows are among the first things noticed both by potential buyer and thieves. They are the focal point of your home, and depending on what kind of window treatment they have, can announce to outsiders how accessible the home is. One of the most reliable methods to prevent and discourage robberies is to install security shutters.

Sometimes, the stereotype of security shutters may be a picture of ugly, squeaky shutters that are stiff and hard to maneuver. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Security shutters are made to neatly fit into their neighboring blade, providing a tight seal, and a smooth, sleek look. Exterior shutters can be attached to move on a side or top hinge, or can quietly, glide across two parallel metal tracks. You can slide exterior security shutters with the tips of your fingers into place or use a remote control.

How can security shutters help if you travel often or want to take an extended vacation? Manufacturers have available control timers. The timers can be easily programmed to open and close your security shutters every day, throughout the day, or different times. If there is someone with mobility difficulties, this convenience can help them freely change the window exposure, day or night. Furthermore, your home has the appearance of being occupied which makes the potential thief want to pick out another target.

One popular security shutter is exterior accordion shutters. These are designed with vertical rows of nested blades held tightly by fasteners in several places. Accordion shutters roll along two parallel tracks to the other side. You can also get a keyed locking system to use in and outside of your home. Additionally, manufacturers offer remote controls to maneuver your shutters as you stand a short distance away.

Roll-down metal and Bahamas shutters are two other popular styles. These are usually purchased at first to be used as emergency shutters during severe weather. You probably would not use these shutters on a daily basis because they can block all the sunlight from the interior. Roll-down metal shutters and Bahamas shutters do not keep out the heat since their primary function is to be a protective shield.

For example, homeowners use emergency exterior security shutters whenever extreme weather suddenly develops. Modern weather forecasting has shown a regular hurricane season for Gulf Coast and Florida residents using shutters, and can tell them if a hurricane is en route. Even residents from all over the country use security shutters to help protect their homes against the destruction of a tornado or severe hail storm.

Exterior security shutters are made of strong materials such as metal or steel. However, just having their plain, metal appearance, they still will help prevent your windows from shattering from large, flying debris, and harming your family, when the storm hits. The benefits may also include homeowner insurance discounts and increased market value. It’s easy to see why people from all over the country feel safer from home invasion or when a hurricane makes landfall after installing security shutters.
