Should You Replace Sash Windows With Double Glazing? no comments
Living in a period townhouse for over fifteen years I recently carried out a series of decorating and improvement projects which got me thinking about my lovely sash windows. Quite simply, my dilemma was should I tear them out and replace with double glazing?
My home whilst very well built is nearly 100 years old and as such suffers from a number of symptoms which shall we say are age related. The main one for me is that it tends to be cold which at my time of life is not ideal.
So being a person of action I got busy and went about tackling the cold by undertaking the following work;
1) Roof insulation – loft insulation is a more accurate description, the fact is that homes can lose up to 15% of their heat through the roof, which as well as making the place cold will also mean you spend more on heating.
2) Door seals and floor insulation – Basically I went around my home using a variety of foam based products to fill gaps and seal door edges.
Whilst very effective addressing these two areas was not going to be enough as my lovely period windows rattled in the wind and definitely needed attention. But I had read somewhere that replacing sash windows with modern double glazed units was a bad idea as it spoilt the character of a property and could even reduce its value.
I mentioned earlier that I am a person of action so I decided to get stuck in and see if I could find a solution. I went to my PC and typed double glazing Nottingham into a search engine and found a couple of local companies who look established and seem to have lots of good customer testimonials.
Quite simply I discussed my concerns with them and asked about potential solutions. I was amazed to discover that there are such things as sash windows built out of modern UPVC which would deliver two benefits to my properties. The first benefit being that they would ensure that the character of the property was not spoilt in anyway thus retaining its look and value. Secondly and more importantly I would have a properly insulated home with low maintenance windows.
